"...you know, I don't think the Maker has much say in naming these things."

Why yes, he is just neatly ignoring the fact that Reya said 'gods' plural, not 'god', singular.

"What is bringing this thing here going to achieve, again? Because I still think this is blood magic, and that can only lead to me getting my still-beating heart ripped out of my chest.

Just going to let that whole monotheism thing slide. Nothing good comes of giving people grief over their (non baby sacrificing) faith, even if she's living proof there's more than one deity. "The name is the least of this thing's problems. It looks like a flying dinner plate with tentacles!"

She paused and shivered, "I seem to recall Coran reading a story about one of these things getting into an all girls college of magic."

Yeah, she'd kicked him out of the party real fast.

"The prophecy was pretty specific about what we need to unlock this lair of the dungeon, and if we can't get down there, we don't have much hope of discovering Lord Tyrannus's next move." She looked back and rolled her eyes. "Don't be absurd. That would be a waste of a perfectly good heart."

"Right, of course. Never mind that tearing out someone's heart is evil and wrong, we wouldn't want to waste it." He was still fairly certain that she was walking on the wrong side of magic, but he couldn't afford to be picky right now. He frowned and pursed his lips.

"So what, we have to kill it? Take its tentacles, wave them around under a full moon?"

She just sighed. "Magic can perform many wonders, but getting you to take a joke seems to not be one of them." Not that Alister hadn't proven to have his own 'special' brand of humor, but really, he got so uptight when it came to magic. Really, she'd used hearts in magic like six times tops, and only one had been human, and he'd been the one to ask her to use it in the first place to save his soul. Was that so wrong?

"Nothing like that. We have to get it to put three of its tentacles in the right three holes in the wall." She eyes the Flump, which for the moment seems content to just float there. "And try not to let it spit acid on us."

"Of course it's going to spit acid. It couldn't spit something else, like delicious cookie dough." He sighed, glancing first to the Flump and then to the door.

"And how exactly are we supposed to do that? Just -- ask it?" Alistair is never going to be okay with magic, not fully. He might not have bought in to the Chantry's words, but he'd seen what corrupt mages could do with his own two eyes.

"If it spat delicious cookie dough I'm fairly certain it would have been domesticated and mass bred centuries ago." Or if it hadn't, it should have been, that sounded amazing!

"We could try?" she shrugged. "I'm not sure if a Charm Monster spell would work on it, so I'd rather hold off." Being a mage hadn't spared Reya from the whims of mad wizards, she still bore the scars of the attentions of one of the worst, and the memories of the friends he had stolen. The difference was, she saw magic as no more evil than a blade, its use or misuse dependent on the wielder.

"Well, better ask it." She's looking at you Alister.

Some of the most powerful magics in his world were granted from demons, so his scepticism was understandable. He sighed, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Oh, no -- me? Who's the magically inclined one, here?" She was going to give him some excuse about needing to keep the tentacle creature inside of a safe zone with her magic, he just knew it.

"I really think it likes you better, anyway."

Differing worlds did offer equally legitimate viewpoints that were also equally hard to shake when faced with their opposite.

"I never had much luck with languages." Okay, that was a bald faced lie, you had to learn a half dozen just to be a mage, but she hated being predictable. "Besides, you're the funny one, I'm the solid leader. It'll relate to you better."

She gave the Flumph a look, and it fluttered its tendrils at her. A passage from Coran's book flashed through her mind, and she shuddered. "That's what I'm afraid of."
woahwoahawkward: (Was that an actual compliment?)

[personal profile] woahwoahawkward 2012-08-24 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Right, just because I'm the funny one -- I see how it is. Alistair, be the bait! Alistair, go touch the gross tentacles." He shakes his head a little and then moves over to the Flump, tentatively poking it with a gauntleted hand.

"Do we know what the 'right configuration' is, exactly?"
andhishat: (Mischief managed)

[personal profile] andhishat 2012-08-24 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
"You have a gift Alister, a rare gift that others need and value. You should be more appreciative of your good fortune." Granted, a gift for being bait wasn't the best ever handed out. "Would it help if I fluttered my eyelashes and looked all small and helpless?"

"I know that if whoever built this place was that specific about which tentacles go in what holes I'm going to travel back in time and castrate them."

"I wouldn't put it past the people who build these kind of things. I'd always heard rumours that they were probably mad, you know." At least the Tevinter mages who'd built the ones Alistair was familiar with.

He rolled his eyes and stepped toward the creature, wrapping a hand around the nearest tentacle experimentally. It squirmed, but didn't go for his throat or anything like that -- that was a good sign, right?

"Okay, mister, into the hole you go..."
andhishat: (I'm going to set you on fire now)

[personal profile] andhishat 2012-08-30 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Probably?" Reya gave her best snort, "Alister, these people built a giant complex of underground tunnels and rooms, full of deadly traps, strange monsters, and arcane treasures, then surrounded it with dark and deadly rumors about the fate of all who entered, all to hide something that would have been better hidden if they just shoved it in a hole and forgot about it. Probably is giving far too much credit." Having spent years of her life moving from one dungeon to the next, Reya felt uniquely qualified to make claims about the sanity of their creators.

Generally good. Now they just had to hope it wouldn't panic when he tried to move it-

"Alister, watch out!"

Yup. It was panicking.
